AFC Roster Building Notes

Let’s talk AFC East roster building!

The move that Buffalo has made that immediately jumps out to me is the Matt Haack signing. Because he’s a former Dolphin? Yes. But also because he was last year’s best punter. Didn’t know Buffalo coveted a punter.

The Emmanuel Sanders signing reminds me of the 49ers and Saints picking up Ted Ginn for their respective Super Bowl runs. Not altogether different from Miami’s Will Fuller signing.

Matt Milano is a guy whose name flashed a couple years ago. I’m guessing he either got hurt, opted out, or played at the same level this year. Total ignorance. I could find out, but… it’s Buffalo. And you’re not looking to me for that.

What are you looking to me for?

The Patriots have been busy, and I already spend too much time with Billy B on my mind. So I’m looking at the Jets.

Corey Davis is who I had talked myself into wanting Miami to target. By the time I’d come to that conclusion, he was a Jet. Which is about how Free Agency goes for me. You can maybe see why I usually enjoy a Wait and See approach.

Colin Cowherd doesn’t like this signing. Colin Cowherd doesn’t like many things. But his point is valid. Corey Davis is inconsistent. The Jets don’t want consistency, they want warm bodies that want to be in New York. Isn’t the Jets’ stadium in New Jersey?

The New York Jets’ number one priority in their roster building enterprise is that their players want to be in New Jersey.

Good thing that’s not the Lions’ pitch.

I think Corey Davis is a good signing for the Jets. I think if they get Kenny Golladay they’re already sunk, no matter who the quarterback is. I watched the last time Woody Johnson built a team for a defensive coach. And Sam Darnold isn’t Ryan Fitzpatrick.

  • These other names - Josh Adams, Keelan Cole, Carl Lawson, Jarrad Davis, Justin Hardee, Lamarcus Joyner read like a list of depth guys. Marcus Maye was a no-brainer. Nothing exciting.

This Jets team is going to be bad. But we knew that.

The New England Patriots are going to be good this year.

And there are weighty rumors Deshaun Watson is going to be a Patriot next year.

Other writers and talkers are going to focus on the narrative that Billy B is burnt up that Tommy Toms found success with another franchise. I don’t think so. The Saints are dealing with the salary cap woes that the Patriots dealt with last year. Surprise, surprise, after spending 20 years drafting in the 20s or better, they’re devoid of talent.

Dump a bunch of bloated contracts and start over next season. They are doing what Miami did last year: reloading in a big way. The only difference is the Patriots feel like a Super Bowl contender because of Billy B.

But I glossed over the actual talking point with the Patriots.

Apparently the Deshaun Watson to New England thing could actually happen. I don’t believe it - don’t want to believe it - but it could happen. I don’t know if that really changes everything. Watson couldn’t win on his own merits last season.

But it wouldn’t be on his own merits alone in New England, would it?

Hey, thanks for reading. This was really more of a Notes-Thoughts piece than anything substantive. But you know that, don’t you? You read it.
