Patience - A Dolphins Free Agency Story
Football games are not won in March.
I think we understand this on some level. But I also think that Free Agency, like the draft, is fun. Is about fun. For the fans, for the media, for people like me who are caught somewhere between, free agency is a chance to dream - to imagine your team with all the best available talent on it.
The Miami Dolphins are not going to target much of that talent. I think their pre-free agency trades are proof of that. I think if they were going to sign a wide receiver, they would have done it already. Signing a guy on Day One of the free agency period is about prestige. It’s a chance for these billionaire owners to show the world something expensive they bought.
To borrow a quote from Jerry Jones: “The truth is most anything that I’ve ever been involved in that ended up being special, I overpaid for, every time, to the end.”
Is there anyone special among these free agents? I don’t think so. And I don’t think that Chris Grier, Brian Flores, or Stephen Ross (for what it’s worth) think any differently.
Watching talent like Davon Godchaux walk away is not easy. I liked Godchaux a lot. Especially seeing him go to - and be overpaid by - the Patriots, it’s difficult. But we, as fans, as the Miami Dolphins Hopeful, have to remember that the Patriots did this for twenty years – They let their best players walk out the door for bigger contracts elsewhere, banking on building their team through the supplemental draft.
I read a piece last week bemoaning that Miami wouldn’t be getting any supplemental picks this year. I think it was Cameron Wolfe. I should source this stuff.
Supplemental draft picks have been for twenty years Bill Belichik’s secret team-building weapon. We can all see that the Patriots are depleted from twenty years of teams scalping their roster.
Let’s see if Miami can be disciplined. Can they hold pat? Do they trust their coaching staff? Can the players they’ve already acquired develop how they envision?
I don’t know. But I do suspect Miami to stay quiet. I have a feeling another trade is coming. I have a feeling this one will be… splashier.
I’ll be keeping my eyes and ears open.
Oh. And I’m taking Aaron Jones as a prediction well-made. Thanks for reading!
